1500 Before Christ
Pilotage services can be traced back centuries and were provided at locations where seagoing vessels required assistance to sail to the sea on local waterways and the adjoining basins, Images from around 1500 BC of pilot Knem Hotep, who conducted pilotage services on the Nile, still exist.
The chronicles of the Vereniging Nederlandse Loodsensociëteit: Een eeuw loodsen op en om de Schelde (1984) (A Century of Piloting on and around the river ScheIdt), tell the story of the Scheldt pilot Carausius, who proclaimed himself emperor in the year 286, ruled Britain up until the year 293 and elevated it to the status of naval power.
