ISPO
Pilots care for the safety of ship, crew and environment. The pilot gives his contribution with the knowledge that the ship-owner also has to deal with economical interests. Pilots have to combine efficiency and safety.
ISPO has been developed to provide insight in the contribution of pilots in reducing risks and the support in an efficient voyage of vessels.
ISPO stands for International Standard for Pilot Organisations. The expression ‘Pilot Organisation’ is used to indicate the party responsible for being ISPO compliant. This party should ensure that the implementation of each applicable ISPO item is not in conflict with national and/or regional rules, regulations, customs & traditions and should satisfy the authorised external auditor that each applicable ISPO item is covered.
The need for ISPO
With the ISPO-certification the Pilot Organisation makes clear that independent classification party’s assure that the organisation is working according to specific organisation rules. To get an ISPO-certificate the organisation has to prove permanently that his members are working on the improvement of processes and that they invest in education, training and material.
Headlines of the code
There are numerous Pilot organisations in the world, each dealing with local administration- and legalisation rules. The complexity and the different circumstances of each port ask for specific solutions for each Pilot organisation. The ISPO code gives organisations enough possibilities to implement procedures and instructions on their own way. However the code contains a general basic line for all organisations together which needs to be complied with.
